Machu Picchu is in the Andes of southern Peru. Machu Picchu is one of the most important archaeological sites in the region of Cuzco, known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It was a fortress and a shrine of the Incas; was not known by the Spanish conquerors. Hiram Bingham, of Yale University, explored the ruins of Machu Picchu in 1911.
